NY Times: Coca-Cola Funds Obesity Science
More and more, people are beginning to understand that sugary beverages significantly contribute to obesity and diabetes. City governments are moving to tax sugary beverages and sales are slipping. It’s similar to the backlash leveled against the cigarette industry, and just like Phillip Morris and RJR Nabisco, these embattled companies have decided to fund their own scientific research to inject confusion into the discussion.
The New York Times has an excellent article detailing how Coca Cola has funded the Global Energy Balance Network in order to convince the public that what you eat doesn’t impact your health nearly as much as how much you move. It’s part of the same “a calorie is a calorie” nonsense that processed food companies have been pushing for decades to put the blame on the people that eat their products rather than on what they decided to put in them. I highly suggest you read it so that you can see the source of conflicting information you’re going to be seeing in the near future.
